The Siblings Book Tag (Original)

Hi guys! I'm back today with an original book tag, co-created with my sister, Pooja. So today, we'll be doing a new Siblings Book Tag, featuring original questions penned specifically for this tag. My sister and I took turns answering these questions and honestly, it was super fun to do. If you also have siblings, feel free to do this tag as well. It'll be lots of fun, I promise!

1. Name your favorite childhood book.

Me: Goosebumps by R.L. Stine

Pooja: The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

This question does set the mood, doesn't it? XD

2. Name a book you loved but which your sister didn't like.

Me: The Last Vampire by Christopher Pike.

This was the series I first became obsessed about when I was a teen. It was also my first dip in vampire literature and I loved it so much I couldn't wait to get my sister to read it. Eventually, she did read it. And didn't like it... >_<

Pooja: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Despite all my sister’s warnings about how I would find these books boring and over-descriptive, I simply couldn’t help myself from falling in love with the ring bearer and his quest from the Shire to Mount Doom…simply epic!!!

Source

3. Name a character you love but whom your sister doesn't like.

Me: Alisa Perne from The Last Vampire series.

Alisa is literally the last vampire. She's badass and ruthless and to me, she's a bit the 90's vampire version of Celaena Sardothien. And yet my sister can't stand her. Go figure -_-

Pooja: Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

I know that a lot of people, including my sister, believe that Peeta is not a strong enough character. However I believe that his strength resided in his ability to stand by Katniss throughout the terrifying Hunger Games and beyond. Also I think that it must have required much strength to survive the harassing torture of the Capitol and still find a way to eventually resurface. Go Team Peeta!!!

4. What are your favorite bookish habits?

Me: Occasionally mindlessly flipping the pages as I'm reading.

From time to time, I'll just stop reading, brush my fingers across the pages I've read so far, and then continue reading.

Pooja: I love to smell the books I'm reading.

A quick sniff at the pages of a book is an amazing stimulant for a book lover.

Source

5. Name a book you both hated.

A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Spark... Just no.

6. What are your favorite fandoms?

Me: Alice in Wonderland!

I think by now you guys already know that I'm more or less obsessed with Alice in Wonderland ^^

Pooja: The Hunger Games.

The odds were indeed quite favorable in making me fall for the amazing story of the girl on fire!

Source

7. Pick a book you want to steal from your sister's bookshelves.

Me: Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan.

This is only John Green novel I actually really like. I originally read it on my Kindle and was planning to get myself a physical copy but my sister now has it on her shelves so I'll just resort to shameless thievery instead :D

Pooja: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

I think I’m pretty much close to owning that one now ^^

8. What's your common favorite fandom?

Harry Potter ^^

Source

9. Name a book you both really want to read.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

10. Name a fictional places you'd love to visit.

Me: Hogwarts and Camp Half-Blood!

Pooja: Middle-earth, especially Rivendell. And Lothlorien. And The Shire...

Source

11. Name a book you recommended to your sister which she ended up loving.

Me: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

My sister has it easy. Each time she needs to read a new book, she just visits my library and ask for recs. Does that make me her personal librarian??

Pooja: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

I simply had to share that haunting yet beautiful and truthful story with my sister. It gave me an insight on how life could be like for Afghan women during times of conflict and trial. And I wanted her to understand the feelings which were triggered in me while reading that amazing book.

12. Who's your favorite literary crush?

Me: Lestat from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles

Pooja: Finnick Odair from The Hunger Games

13. Name a book series you were surprised to both fall in love with.

Gossip Girl: The Carlyles by Cecily Von Ziegesar

I usually shy away from everything that closely resemble chick-lit and yet, after my sister bought this series, we ended up both falling in love with it.

14. Name your favorite poets (or authors).

Me: E.A. Poe

Love,
Who daily scents its snowy wings, with incense of burnt offerings...

Pooja: John Keats

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness…

Again, do you see a pattern here??

Source

15. Recommend some books to your sister.

Me: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.

Pooja: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, When the Mountains echoed by Khaled Hosseini, An Abundance of Katherines by John Green.

If you also want to do this tag...

1. Don't forget to link your post back to mine.
2. Send me a link to your post so that I can read your answers too :)
3. Maybe you have more than one sibling? Or you have a brother instead of a sister? Simply modify the questions accordingly ^^

So that's it for this tag guys. Definitely feel free to do it if you've enjoyed it ^^

Book Fangirling Blog Award

Hi guys. So today I'm doing the Book Fangirling Blog Award which, in my opinion, has the coolest name ever as far as awards go :D

I was nominated for this tag by the lovely Kaja over at Of Dragons and Hearts. This tag was originally created by the blogger Hannah and you can visit her blog here

  • Create a post to accept your award
  • Add the blog award button into your post
  • Link to me in the post so they know who has given you the award
  • Answer the questions I have set below
  • Nominate 5 book bloggers who you think deserve this award
  • Come up with your own 5 questions for your nominees
  • Link them to this post so that they know the rules

What is the one book/series that you recommend the most?

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson. It's a beautiful Peter Pan retelling with Tiger Lily as the main character and love interest of Peter. It's beautiful and heartbreaking and simply amazing. See my review of Tiger Lily here.

What is your favourite thing about blogging?

Gushing about my favorite books ^^ I've mentioned this is previous posts, but I don't actually know a lot of book lovers in real life and in fact, it's kind of because I had no one to gush over my books with that I ended up started my book blog.

What book/series do you wish you could love more (i.e. a series that everyone seems to like but you)?

Usually if I don't love a book, I don't feel too much guilt about it to be honest XD. But I wish I could like Jane Austen's books more. My mum loves them, as do most people I know, but I really don't enjoy her books. I don't really mind that much though, lol.

What 2016 release are you most excited about?

There are soooo many I could pick but I'm going to go with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the illustrated edition, which is set to come out in October I think. I'll probably freak out each time I see a spider in the book but oh well... it's Harry Potter :D

What is the craziest/bravest fangirling thing you ever did?

I haven't had much occasions to be a crazy fangirl given that I live in a small island in the Indian Ocean where we never get book signings, author events or even decent book events. So if I really need to pick something I did, it would probably be that one time I went on vacation with my family to Dubai and I ended up spending all of my money at Kinokuniya, an amazingly huge bookstore found in the Dubai Mall. I'm not kidding, I didn't even have enough money left afterwards to buy anything else XD.

  1. What is the one book you would love to get a first edition of?
  2. Would you rather visit Neverland or Wonderland?
  3. If you could invite all your favorite book characters to a party, who would you pick?
  4. Have you already met one of your favorite authors before? If not, which author do you wish you could meet one day?
  5. Which character would you love to dress up as? Or maybe you've already dressed up as a favorite character before? If, yes, share a picture ^^

The Book Courtship Tag

Happy Valentine's Day ^^ Okay, so I'm not actually celebrating it this year or anything but I still thought it would be fun to do something a little special for today's post. So I'm doing the Book Courtship Tag. This tag is really cool in that it's broken into 10 phases to represent an actual courtship.

This tag was created by YouTuber Leah and you can check out her channel by clicking here. And now, let's start!

Phase 1 - Initial Attraction: A book that you bought because of the cover

My bind-up edition of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. The books are great but honestly, it was the beautiful cover that gave me the push to actually buy them in this edition.

Phase 2 - First Impressions: A book that you got because of the summary

After Alice by Gregory Maguire. While I'm a huge fan of Maguire and his books now, back around the time After Alice was first published, I had no idea who he was. What got my attention was the blurb on this particular book which pretty much promised an Alice in Wonderland retelling. And frankly, you don't really need much more to hook me in.

Phase 3 - Sweet Talk: A book with great writing

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. Actually, anything by Angela Carter. This is a collection of adult fairy tale retellings, all with a dark and often violent twist. Her prose is very poetic and often contains different layers of meaning. Her books often carry magical realism elements or whimsical elements spun into hard realism scenarios. Her books are really beautiful and I would highly recommend you check them out.

Phase 4 - First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pursue the rest of the series

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. It is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles series and is basically a Cinderella retelling set in a futuristic world full or galactic action, androids and really, really good world building. This and all the other books in the series are simply great and you should definitely check them out if you aren't already a fan.

Phase 5 - Late night phone calls: A book that kept you up all night long

Winter by Marissa Meyer, which is the last book in the Lunar Chronicles. As far as series finale go, this book was simply perfection. It was action packed and superbly written. It's the kind of book that keeps you on the edge of your seat and I couldn't help staying up all night to read it.

Phase 6 - Always on my mind: A book that you could not stop thinking about

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson. This is a very unique Peter Pan retelling with Tiger Lily as the main character and narrated by a very unique version of Tinker Bell. It follows the love story between Tiger Lily and Peter, long before Wendy's arrival at Neverland. It's one of the most poignant YA novels I've ever read and it stuck with me long after I finished it. I highly recommend it. See the quote in the picture below? Gives me the feels every time *sigh*

Phase 7 - Getting Physical: A book in which you love the way it feels

I'm going with my copy of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in the Penguin English Libary edition. Not only does the cover had a nice, smooth texture, but the inside, the pages are bound in such a way that they get crinkly when you turn them. I love it when books have crinkly pages.

Phase 8 - Meeting the Parents: A book in which you would recommend to your friends and family

A Haruki Murakami book, especially Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his years of pilgrimage. All of the Murakami books I read so far were great but I feel Colorless Tsukuru is a good place to start when you've never read his books before. It's one of the least weird of his books but at the same time, it still carries the unique and beautiful writing that is characteristic of his books.

Phase 9 - Thinking about the future: A book or series that you know you'll re-read many times in the future

I'll definitely re-read The Lunar Chronicles and the Harry Potter books again and again in the future. Can you see how worn out my Harry Potter books are? That's the sign of a well beloved book right there. And if you were wondering, those Harry Potter books are in French, which is actually my main language. I also want to re-read Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus, both by Rick Riordan, at some point. And of course, I absolutely need to re-read Tiger Lily.

Phase 10 - Share the love!!! Who would you like to tag?

If you wish to do this tag too, feel free to do so 'cause I'm tagging you, yes, you reading this ^^ If you decide to do, don't forget to link it back to my post and leave me a link to your post so that I can read it.

And if you're celebrating this year, Happy Valentine's Day ^^

The Mean Girls Book Tag!

Source

Today I'm doing the Mean Girls Tag, created by Sarah-Jane from the blog The Book Life. If like me you love Mean Girls and have watched it more than a few times, consider yourself tagged ^^ Please note that I've omitted some of the original questions to re-adapt the tag to my blog. If you wish to do the full original tag, head over to Sarah-Jane's blog.

“She doesn’t even go here!” - Which character would you like to place in a fictional world from another book or series?

Source

I'd love to see how Percy Jackson would be like in Harry Potter's world. Can you imagine Percy hanging out with Harry at Hogwarts? Fangirl dream right there!

“On Wednesdays we wear pink!” - Repetition. Repetition. Which book gave you deja vu of another book whilst reading it?

Source

That would be Silas Marner by George Elliot. It's about a bitter old man who gets all his money stolen, only to find a baby abandoned near where he lives shortly after. As he loses one treasure, another enters his life. A few pages into this and I realized it was almost the same story as another book I had just recently read, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. Turns out The Storied Life is based on Silas Marner! LOL

"You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores." - Which book gave you the complete opposite of girl power feels?

Source

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. Eclipse by... Oh, you get the point.

“You go Glen Coco!” - Name a character you felt like you wanted to cheer on whilst reading.

Source

Elphaba from Wicked by Gregory Maguire. She's Maguire's version of the Wicked Witch of the West in his adult Wizard of Oz retelling. In this version, the Wicked Witch becomes a unique female character who is a feminist and pretty much a rebel in her own way. I was just rooting for her throughout the book, which is not something you'd normally say about the Wicked Witch of the West.

“Get in loser, we’re going shopping!” How long do you typically spend at a book shop?

Source

If I have friends waiting for me, I'd say about 15 mins. If I'm on my own? I have no time limit ^^

“I can’t help it that I’m popular.” - Which overhyped book were you cautious about reading?

Source

I was super wary of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and rightfully so. Wasn't impressed by it. Nope. If you've read thriller books by authors like Sidney Sheldon before, you can tell where this book is going by the time you're fifty pages in.

“I’m not like a regular Mom, I’m a cool Mom.” - Your favourite fictional parents.

Source

Mr and Mrs Weasley from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Molly Weasley in particular is such a loving mum. She's also a fabulous mother figure to Harry. She looks after him as if he was one of her own children. Plus, Harry even gets one of the horrible sweaters she makes every single Christmas for her children. If that's not a proof of love :)

“That is so Fetch!” - Which book or series would you love to catch on?

Source

I wish more people would read Gregory Maguire's books. He writes mostly adult magical realism and fantasy books based on fairytales and popular children stories like the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.  I feel like I keep talking about his books on this blog but I can't really help it XD They're just brilliant that way!

So that's it for this tag guys! If you love Mean Girls, feel free to do this tag. If you do it, don't forget to send me a link so that I can read it :)

The Joy of Christmas Book Tag

It's finally Christmas Eve people! Today, I thought I would do the Christmas Book Tag. This lovely tag was created by YouTuber Samantha from the channel Novels and Nonsense and you can watch her original video here.

Let's begin!

Anticipation: The Christmas excitement is real, what book release(s) are you most anticipating?

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. This will be the first book in the a new Shadowhunter series called Dark Artifices and is coming out early March 2016. I love the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series, also by Clare, and I can't wait to dive back in the Shadowhunter world.

Christmas Songs & Carols: What book or author can you not help but sing it's praises?

I'm going with Gregory Maguire. He writes mainly adult fairytale retellings and his prose is both descriptive and lyrical, making his stories poetic despite their often dark themes. I read two of his books including Wicked, the book which inspired the musical, and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, which is a Cinderella retelling from the POV of one of her 'ugly' stepsisters. I would absolutely recommend this author and these two books to everyone. I'm hoping to read more of his books in the coming year.

Gingerbread Houses: What book or series has wonderful world building?

The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer, has one of the most unique and best described fictional universe I've come across. It is set in an distant future in a world where androids, advanced technologies and cities on the moon are absolutely normal. Meyer does a great job bringing this universe to life with her vivid descriptions and beautiful prose. As someone who normally don't enjoy sci-fi, I found myself falling in love with this love within the first few chapters of the first book and it's now a fictional universe I'll be revisiting from time to time.

A Christmas Carol: Favorite classic or one that you want to read

My favorite classic is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I haven't read it in years but I recently bought a new edition of the book and hope to read it very soon.

Christmas Sweets: What book would you love to receive for Christmas?

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas. I recently bought Throne of Glass and am planning to buy the other books in the series before I finally start it. The plan is to marathon the whole thing before the next book comes out. I honestly don't know what took me so long to get into this series, lol.

Candles in the Window: What book gives you that warm fuzzy feeling ?
Source

The illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone definitely gives me those warm fuzzy feelings. Not only is Harry Potter my book of choice for Christmas, but the illustrated version also brings everything I love about this book to life through an even more magical experience. I'm glad I kept this book for Christmas and I have a feeling I might be taking it out of my bookshelf next Christmas too.

Christmas Trees & Decorations: What are some of your favorite book covers?

Source

I really love the cover of the illustrated edition of Harry Potter. It really conveys the magic concealed between the pages of the book. Another cover I really love is that of the Puffin Chalk edition of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. All the books in this edition are equally stunning but my favorite is definitely this one.

Christmas Joy: What are some of your favorite things about Christmas and/or some of your favorite Christmas memories?
I have two favorite Christmas memories. The first one was when I was eleven. That Christmas morning, I opened my presents to discover my first Harry Potter book. Even now, as I remember that day, I can still feel how magical it was to open the book for the first time. That Christmas morning was magical and because of it, I'll always associate Harry Potter with Christmas.

Source

My second favorite memory was of my trip to Hong Kong last year to spend Christmas there with my family. On the night before Christmas, we went to watch The Nutcracker performed by the Hong Kong Ballet. It was my first time watching ballet performed in an actual theater and by a professional dance company. We just don't have these things here in Mauritius. I loved every moment of it. The ballet itself was amazing, of course. But what made that evening so special was also the beauty of the actual theater and the mere fact that I was there. I kept glancing at the ceiling and the people sitting around me, almost giddy at the realization that this was actually happening. I suppose there are much grander theaters elsewhere but for me, that night, that was truly the most beautiful of places.

'Tis The Season Book Tag!

Christmas is fast approaching guys! So today, I thought I would do a Christmassy book tag. The 'Tis The Season Book Tag was created by BookTuber Richard Denney and I do recommend you check out his channel because his videos are always hilarious and painfully on point. You can watch his original video here.

Before we start, I'd like to remind you that I am currently hosting a Christmas Giveaway, which you can enter for a chance to win any free book of your choice. Click here to check out this giveaway ^^

Okay, let's start!

1. Do you have a favorite winter read?

I don't have a specific title but I really enjoy children books in winter. I guess it's because of the warm memories attached to many of these books, especially my Enid Blyton books. Plus. with their wickedly good descriptions of food and candy, these books are perfect to be enjoyed with some biscuits and tea while it's cold and windy outside.

2. Find a book with blue on the cover!

My pick for this one is The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton. Although there is nothing particularly Christmassy about this book, I do associate it with the holiday season because it was last December, while I was in Hong Kong with my family, that I read it. It was raining outside and we were stuck at the hotel and to pass the time, I began to read this book. It took me the whole trip to get through it so now I associate it to that December spent in Hong Kong.

3. Find a book you’d use as the star on a Christmas tree!

Without question, the pick for this one has to be my bind-up edition of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It has tiny silver stars strewn across the cover and is simply stunning on my shelf. It's also one of the books I've been most anticipating to read this Christmas and so far I'm really enjoying it.

4. Pick one fictional place that would be perfect for a winter vacation!

Hogsmeade, hands down! Okay, any place in the Harry Potter universe would work too but I feel Hogsmeade is really the best place to pick because of all the amazing shops you could visit there. Like Honeydukes?!

5. Pick one fictional character you’d take with you on your winter vacation!

Source

I would pick the Weasley twins, again from the HP universe. No one knows how to have fun better than these two. Now just imagine a trip to Hogsmeade with them. Imagine the snowball fights! Yep, the Weasley twins would definitely be my vacation buddies.

6. Name one book on your wish list this year!

Source

The Marvels by Brian Selznick. This book not only looks gorgeous but it also sounds like it's going to be a beautiful read. It's a little pricey though, being in hardback and having illustrations for almost half of it. I might buy it as a little end of year treat to myself. We'll see :)

7. Favorite holiday drink, treat, & movie?

Source

I don't have a specific favorite holiday drink but my favorite Christmas treat has to be cookies. I think no other treat says Christmas more than some cute cookies. My favorite Christmas movie is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Also, while I'm not usually a fan of romantic movies, there is something about the holiday season which just make me want to watch something sweet and romantic. So, if I had to pick a second movie, it would be Love Actually ^^

And that's it for this tag guys. If you enjoyed it, consider yourself tagged! If ever you do the tag, feel free to send me a link to your blog post or video.

Fall Time Cozy Book Tag

Today I have the super fun Fall Time Cozy Book Tag, created by Sam from Novels and Nonsense. You can watch her original video here. Even if we don't actually have Fall where I live, it's actually my favorite season. The fashion is cozy and awesome, the seasonal recipes are great and you get lots and lots of awesome new book releases. I mean, seriously, the Fall months are where many of the year's most anticipated books are released. So I thought I would do this tag anyway, just for the fun of it.

So, let's get started ^^

Crunching Leaves

The world is full of color. Choose a book that has reds, oranges or yellows on the cover.

For this I have to go with City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. It has russet, red, orange, a little bit of yellow and even some brown, all of which reminds me of Fall leaves.

Cozy Sweater

It's finally cold enough to don warm, cozy clothing. What book gives you the warm fuzzies?

Winne the Pooh by A.A. Milne just has to be my pick for this one. I read it maybe two months earlier and the stories and characters just made me so happy. It's just one of those books which make you feel like a kid again, you know? Definitely one that gives you the warm fuzzies!

Fall Storm

The wind is howling and the rain is pounding. Choose your favorite book or genre that you like to read on a stormy day.

For me, stormy or rainy days are perfect for reading classics, especially the mystery or adventure ones. Gothic ones work too. I feel like a Charles Dickens or even a Brontë book would be perfect, along with a cup of warm tea and a few biscuits. I'm actually saving my new copy of Jane Eyre for November because here in Mauritius, that's when we start getting storms and heavy downpours and I feel that's just the kind of weather that would be perfect for Jane Eyre.

Cool Crisp Air

What's the coolest character you'd want to trade places with?

Okay this character is not one I would call the coolest but she's definitely one whose place I wouldn't mind taking and that's Tessa from The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. Yeah, her life is occasionally in peril, but she gets to hang out with Will and Jem!!! Also, if I could take her place, I would totally pick Jem and end the love triangle right there and then, haha. Team Jem forever <3

Hot Apple Cider

What under-hyped book do you want to see become the next biggest, hottest thing?

John Green and David Levithan are both popular YA writers, but there's one book they co-wrote that I feel isn't as hyped as their other books and that's Will Grayson, Will Grayson. Seriously guys, that's my favorite John Green book. I don't read lots of funny books but that one had me laughing aloud, and at work no less, 'cause I actually read it while I was doing an internship.

Coat, Scarves and Mittens

The weather has turned cold and it's time to cover up. What's the most embarrassing book cover you own that you like to keep hidden in public?

I would have my pick out of all the books I bought during my short lived paranormal romance phase back in my high school days. I mean, those covers are basically naked body parts and text XD

Pumpkin Spice

What's your favorite Fall Time comfort food or drink?

Like I said, we don't have Fall here but when it gets cold, my comfort drink is tea. I just love a cup of warm tea when it's cold outside. Add some butter biscuits and you have the perfect afternoon break. I also should point out that tea time is my favorite time of the day ^^

Warm, Cozy Bonfire

Spread the cozy warmth! Who do you tag?

If you enjoyed this tag and want to do it, simply consider yourself tagged. I'm also going to tag a few specific people. Here are the lovely bloggers that I tag:
Ramona @ My Bookish Life
Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight

If you've already done this tag (sorry for tagging you again XD) or plan to do it, leave me links to your posts down in the comments so that I can go read them ^^
